Welcome to The Lighter Side of Retirement, where Earl, his wife Dot, and their dog Tippy, and occasionally their friends Norm and Pastor Dave, take a humorous look at retirement, aging, money, faith, and the often bewildering experience of being a Christian trying to finish well in a world that can’t quite agree on what that means.
Each cartoon and accompanying article tackles a topic related to retirement and stewardship with humor while also making a genuine point.
The characters are fun and lovable, and each approaches things differently. Pastor Dave is younger in years but patient, kind, and genuinely rich in wisdom. Norm is the retirement magazine poster boy. Earl works hard at it and means well, but occasionally gets lost in the details. Dot sees things clearly, but often has a degree of skepticism. And Tippy, who’s named after a certain inflation-protected financial instrument, never misses a chance to offer thoughts and “tips” of his own—he has questions and opinions about everything.
